Gel-X vs Builder Gel: Which One Fits You?

4 minute read

Gel-X and Builder Gel are the two services guests ask us about most, and they do different jobs. Gel-X adds length with light, full-cover soft gel tips. Builder Gel strengthens the nails you already have. Both usually last three to four weeks. Here's how to tell which one fits you.

What Gel-X is

Gel-X starts with a pre-shaped soft gel tip that covers your whole nail. We prep your natural nail, bond the tip, cure it under an LED lamp, then shape it and finish with gel color or art. You pick the length and shape. Short and square for typing all day, medium almond, long coffin for an event, it's your call. Because the tips are soft gel rather than acrylic, the set feels light on your hands. When it's time for a new set, it soaks off. We don't drill product off your natural nail.

What Builder Gel is

Builder Gel, often called BIAB, is a thicker gel we brush over your natural nail to build strength and a smooth, glossy arch. Think of it as a support layer. Your own nails keep growing underneath, protected from the peeling and snapping that stop most people from ever getting length of their own. It can add a small extension, but its real job is making thin or bendy nails feel solid.

How to choose

If you want length today, choose Gel-X. If you want your natural nails to finally grow, choose Builder Gel. If you're rough on your hands, tell us. No product is unbreakable, and we'd rather set honest expectations than sell you the wrong thing. Plenty of guests switch between the two through the year, Gel-X before a trip or a wedding, Builder Gel for the everyday stretch in between.

What your appointment looks like

Every service starts the same way at Palace: cleaned and disinfected tools, single-use files and buffers, and unhurried prep, because prep is what makes a set last. A Gel-X full set usually takes about 75 to 90 minutes. Builder Gel runs about 60 to 90 minutes depending on art. If you're adding custom art, we'll agree on the design, the time, and the price before we start.

Pricing and upkeep

Gel-X full sets start at $60 and Builder Gel starts at $60, cash prices. The final price depends on length, art level, and add-ons, and both cash and card prices are on our Services and Pricing page. Both services are happiest on a three to four week cycle, so most guests book their next visit at checkout. And if your gel lifts, chips, or peels within 7 days of your appointment, text us a photo and we'll schedule a complimentary fix when available. That's our 1-Week Promise.

Quick answers

Which lasts longer, Gel-X or Builder Gel?

About the same, three to four weeks with normal care. Prep and aftercare matter more than the product.

Is Gel-X gentler than acrylic?

Many guests find it so. It's lighter on the hand and soaks off instead of being filed away.

Can I get nail art on both?

Yes. Chrome, cat eye, French, and fully custom art all work on either base.

Will Builder Gel give me length?

A little. For real length, Gel-X is the better tool.

How does removal work?

Both soak off. Book removal as an add-on, and please don't pick a set off at home. Your natural nails will thank you.

Can I walk in for Gel-X or Builder Gel?

When there's room, gladly. Booking online holds your spot, including evenings and Sundays.
