A fresh pedicure lasts longest when you protect three windows: the first two hours while regular polish finishes hardening, the daily minute it takes to keep skin soft, and the rebooking point about four weeks out. The first two hours: guard the polish

Regular polish is dry to the touch within minutes, but it keeps hardening for hours underneath. That thin surface skin is why a pedicure can look perfect in the chair and show a sheet mark or a sandal dent by bedtime. For the rest of the day, treat the polish gently: wear open-toed shoes or loose sandals home, skip socks and tight sneakers, and if you booked an evening appointment, give your toes a little clearance from heavy blankets that first night. Two careful hours is usually enough, and a full day of caution is even better if you can manage it.

Gel is the exception, and it is the reason many guests stop thinking about this window entirely. Gel polish cures completely under the lamp before you stand up, so you can lace up sneakers in the parking lot without leaving a mark. If your schedule never has a spare two careful hours, that one difference may decide your polish choice for you.

Daily habits that keep the softness

The scrub, the mask, and the massage do the heavy lifting during your appointment. Your job afterward is simply to keep that moisture from escaping. The easiest habit is also the most effective: apply lotion to your feet within a few minutes of every shower, while the skin is still slightly damp, with extra attention on the heels. It takes under a minute, and it is the single biggest difference between feet that feel smooth for a month and feet that feel rough again in a week.

Twice a week or so, add a drop of cuticle oil, or any light oil you already own, around each toenail before bed. Cuticles frame the polish, and when they stay soft the whole pedicure reads as fresh. In sandal weather, when bare heels meet warm pavement every day, a thicker cream at night helps hold on to the smoothness the scrub created.

When gel on toes earns its keep

On hands, gel polish wears for about 2 to 3 weeks. On toes, where nails grow more slowly and take fewer knocks, the color often outlasts the nail itself: regrowth at the base, not chipping, is usually what tells you it is time to rebook. Signs it is time to rebook

Most pedicure guests rebook about every 4 weeks, and anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks is a comfortable rhythm. Rather than watching the calendar, watch your feet for three signs: a visible strip of bare nail at the base of the polish, heels that start to catch on sheets or feel rough through the day, and polish wearing thin at the tips. Any one of them means the last pedicure has finished its work.
